Review February Action Items
- Continue to send MSU art inventory information to Courtney Johnson
- Action Item: Royce to continue researching the policies regarding the acquisition of student art
- Action Item: Courtney Johnson and Olivia Hayes to continue working with Melissa Johnson
to resubmit the Harrison Hall call for submissions
- The new submission deadline will be a week after the end of the Spring 2020 semester
- Committee previously discussed working with MSU Communications for support with advertising the call for artists
- Action Item: Richard Rudnicki is continuing to draft PAAC procedural policy
- The Montana Arts Council (MAC) selection committee met in February and determined
the final artists for Romney Hall
- The MAC is working with President Cruzado to determine the final art for the Romney Hall Cruzado Auditorium
Cindy Bowker – Art Donation 1
- Cindy Bowker contacted the university about donating two fabric art pieces to the American Indian Hall (AIH)
- The AIH Art Subcommittee has reviewed the proposed art donation by Cindy Bowker
- The Subcommittee expressed concerns with accepting the art and recommends that PAAC decline the donation
- Kris Johnson moved to accept the recommendation of the AIH Art Subcommittee and respectfully
decline the donation
- Courtney Johnson seconded the motion
- PAAC voted to approve the motion (decline the donation)
Cindy Bowker – Art Donation 2
- Cindy Bowker has offered to donate works by Artist DJ House to MSU.
- The three pieces do not include any framing or mounting
- Richard Rudnicki contacted the artist and ensured that they were supportive of the donation and could provide context for the artwork
- Committee discussed many of the considerations involved in accepting the proposed donation
- PAAC discussed the difference between agreeing to acquire vs display art in the context
of where art is stored while not being displayed
- PAAC discussed the challenges of acquiring art without the intention to display it permanently
- PAAC members explained the challenge of acquiring art without a planned display location, as MSU does not have the space to store art to allow for rotating collections or temporary exhibitions
- PAAC was encouraged to accept art donations with a designated location to for display in mind
- Committee reviewed the PAAC Policies document and determined that the proposed donation
did not meet the Evaluation Criteria and Requirements of all Proposals, specifically
criteria 2A2f: “Works of art must include a dedicated display mechanism, apparatus,
or pedestal this is appropriately engineered and carefully constructed of durable
and appropriate materials”
- PAAC Policies has been reviewed by UFPB but not yet formally adopted as MSU policy
- Elizabeth Anthony moved to accept Cindy Bowker’s Art Donation – 2, contingent on the
donor properly framing the art
- Melissa Ragain seconded the motion
- The vote passed with one objection
- Action Item: PAAC to review the PAAC procedural process and evaluation criteria for discussion at PAAC in May
BAC Art – Artists Ivan Navarro & Courtney Smith
- Richard Rudnicki presented the latest design rendering of the piece by Ivan Navarro for the Bobcat Athletic Stadium and two general locations have been selected for the piece
- The protective box structure was designed with consideration of the elements and human
access
- Committee expressed concern with the design of the protective structure
- Concerned with aesthetics and practicability
- Committee expressed concern with the design of the protective structure
- PAAC is requested to approval either of the designated locations for the construction
of the piece
- The final materials of the design are not yet determined
- CPDC will ensure the design meets the appropriate construction and design standards with regards to safety, appearance, and accessibility for maintenance
- The College of Architecture is interested in offering student collaboration with the project
- Kris Johnson suggested selecting the location to the west, within the garden
- Kris Johnson moved to approve the selected locations
- Royce Smith seconded the motion
- PAAC unanimously approved the location of the BAC Art by Ivan Navarro & Courtney Smith
Draft MSU Artwork Signage
a. Courtney Johnson shared her draft for standardized art signage at MSU
b. Discussed that other organizations are incorporating QR codes
c. Action Item: PAAC to review draft of MSU Artwork Signage and provide feedback to
Courtney Johnson
