16th International Conference on the Physics and Chemistry of Ice (PCI-2027)

We are pleased to announce that the 16th International Conference on the Physics and Chemistry of Ice (PCI-2027) will be held in Bozeman, Montana, from June 28 to July 2, 2027. This international meeting brings together researchers from across the globe to explore all aspects of ice science, from fundamental physics and chemistry to environmental and planetary applications. Registration and abstract submission will open in January 2027. Further details — including lodging, session proposals, and abstract submissions — will be released soon.

Scientific Topics

  • Ice and Life (Near and Far): Ice in biological and planetary environments, including cryobiology, microbial life, astrobiology, habitability, and the role of ice in the origin and preservation of life.
  • Surfaces, Interfaces, and Nucleation: Fundamental processes governing ice formation and growth, including homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, interfacial phenomena, premelting, impurities, and molecular-scale interactions.
  • Ice Phases, Amorphous Ice, and Glass Transitions: Structure, thermodynamics, and transformations of crystalline and amorphous ice, including high-pressure phases, glass transitions, metastable states, and planetary ice.
  • Crystal Growth: Experimental, theoretical, and computational studies of ice crystal growth, morphology, vapor deposition, defects, anisotropy, and growth dynamics.
  • Microstructure, Mechanics, and Electromagnetic Properties: Mechanical behavior and physical properties of ice, including creep, fracture, recrystallization, rheology, and dielectric, optical, and radar properties relevant to laboratory, environmental, and planetary studies.
  • Cryosphere and Environmental Ice Processes: Ice in the Earth system, including glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, snow, permafrost, ice–atmosphere and ice–ocean interactions, climate processes, and environmental change.
