Social and emotional learning for adolescents: A preventative approach to substance misuse

This module is intended to initiate conversations about substance use among teenagers in rural settings by utilizing the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework and activities. To achieve this, the module is designed to be very interactive. The goal is to normalize having discussions about drug and alcohol use with a supportive, safe, non-judgmental adult, to allow misconceptions about peer drug and alcohol use to be debunked, and to do all of this while learning important SEL skills.
Schools and any organizations working with youthages 14-18 are welcome and encouraged to utilize this PowerPoint with their audiences. The instructor who leads the process will act as a facilitator, encouraging interaction.

This presentation is intended for youth audiences ages 14-18. It was presented by the MSU Rural Opioid and Stimulant Education, Awareness, and Training Grant team at the 4H-Congress in July of 2022. Prescription opioid education and awareness toolkit

This toolkit is made up of 5 modules. Each module contains a PowerPoint presentation, printed resources, and links to online videos and resources. Modules can be taught together or separately depending on the needs of the community and the time contraints of the facilitator.
There are two ways to access the toolkit content and materials:
- Contact your local County Extension office! Each County Extension Office across Montana
has two Prescription Opioid Education and Awareness toolkits. Organizations can checkout
a toolkit and facilitate the information to community members.
- Each toolkit contains a flash drive for facilitators to easily access the presentations within each module.
- Watch the module videos, presented by MSU Extension Specialists and project leaders. The Links to the videos below will provide you access to the Montana State University Extension YouTube channel. Once there please subscribe watch, and share the videos.

Montana Primary Care Association
Incorporated in 1987, the Montana Primary Care Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to high-quality, community based, affordable primary health care in Montana. MPCA is the association of Montana’s community health centers. MPCA works to support and increase Montanans’ access to excellent, patient-centered health care. The association provides training and technical assistance to health centers and works to improve access to health care for all – especially for underserved and vulnerable populations.

Department of Health and Human Services - Indian Health Services
The Indian Health Service, an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The provision of health services to members of federally recognized tribes grew out of the special government-to-government relationship between the federal government and Indian tribes. This relationship, established in 1787, is based on Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, and has been given form and substance by numerous treaties, laws, Supreme Court decisions, and Executive Orders. The IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for Indian people, and its goal is to raise their health status to the highest possible level. The IHS provides a comprehensive health service delivery system for approximately 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who belong to 574 federally recognized tribes in 37 states.
